How to Build in Zombies vs Humans

Pillars, roofs, and block HP — the five-minute skill that decides Night.

How to Build a Base

If Night feels impossible, your Build phase is usually the bug. Zombies vs Humans gives every server five minutes to place blocks. Zombies then spend the night deleting those blocks. A cinematic needle in the sky is a piñata. This page is how you spend the five minutes so how to survive has a building left to hide in.

Controls reminder: 1 place, 2 destroy, 3 Anti-Stuck. Full bind list: controls. Starter economy: getting started.

The pillar rule

Community builders (NamuWiki’s Human tips, Fandom building notes) repeat one sentence: many pillars, 3–5 blocks apart, hard blocks on the faces zombies walk. Three diamond pillars still collapse after a few Bomber hits if there is nothing between them. Spread the HP.

A good default at low level:

  1. Four to eight Oak Log or Wooden Plank legs.
  2. A platform you can actually walk, not a 1x1.
  3. A roof. Cannoneer and Hunter both punish open tops.
  4. A torch inside so you see the hole before the explosion animation finishes.
  5. A drop-down or door you can use when the floor is gone. Oak Door / Trapdoor unlock at level 10.

The video in the middle of this page is the anti-pattern: funny towers that still “win” only because the player ran away. Running is valid. The tower was not the reason.

Block tiers (what to spend Money on)

Soft to hard, in the order the shop tends to teach you:

  • Wooden Planks / Oak Logs — cheap volume. Fine for inner fill and first nights.
  • Glass — vision, terrible HP. Use as windows, not load-bearing walls.
  • Ice / Slime — movement tricks, not fortress HP.
  • Iron Block — the first real upgrade (level 8).
  • Gold Block — expensive flex that can pay extra if it survives; do not make it your only spine.
  • Diamond Block (16) / Obsidian Block (26) — the faces you put where Bombers queue.

Scaffold (12) and Truss (15) are for height and Elytra jumping, not for soaking explosions. Gold Block surviving a round is a payout trick listed on community XP tables — nice if you can afford to gamble, bad if it replaces four iron legs.

Anti-patterns that throw nights

  • Single sky needle. Two Bombers, one after another, and everyone falls into the grass.
  • Sealed tomb. You will be chosen as a Zombie or a teammate will need in. Leave a door.
  • Building on zombie spawn. Protohog’s Elytra video says it out loud: late night, do not tour the undead spawn for fun.
  • Stealing a teammate’s only pillar. That is grief, which the Roblox rules ban, and it is also how you lose a Human.
  • No roof versus Cannoneer. They stand still, charge, and delete the top from across the map. Counter with a roof and extra legs, not a taller needle.
  • Using Auto-build. Catalogued on auto-build scripts with a ban warning. Sandbox exists — practice in sandbox and copy a best-bases footprint, then read New Frontiers.

Team Build, even if you become a Zombie

You might roll undead. You still build. A fortress you helped create is a fortress you understand how to siege — and if you stay Human, you needed it. Call outs in chat (“second layer on north,” “leave a trapdoor”) beat four disconnected 1x1s.

If the server is already making a mega-tower, add legs instead of adding height. Height without HP is the Imadumbo joke. Legs are the NamuWiki advice.

Combat building during Night

You can still place if you kept blocks. Panic-scaffolding a bridge is how Humans escape a broken floor — and how Zombies bait you into the open. Keep a stack of cheap planks in hotbar. Grappling Gun (17) and Elytra (50) reduce the need for panic towers; until then, a two-block step around the map (Protohog’s pillar-hop) is enough to reset a Gladiator chase.

Sandbox practice

New Frontiers shipped sandbox. Spend ten minutes placing eight legs and a roof, then explode it yourself as Bomber. You will feel the HP math faster than another theoretical paragraph. Then take that muscle into a rated night and pair it with how to survive.

Build volume, not a monument. The night is a demolition job.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers players ask after every night.

What is the best starter block?

Volume wood for legs, then iron faces as soon as level 8 unlocks. Obsidian is late. See the block tier list.

Why do sky bases still die?

Bombers and Cannoneers delete the spine. Height is not HP. Spread pillars.

What does Anti-Stuck do?

Key 3 unsticks you from your own blocks during Build. Full binds: controls.

Should I build near other players?

Yes, extra legs on a shared fort beat four lonely needles — unless they are sealing you out on purpose.
